Start Me Up is a compendium of contemporary corporate business identities from across the globe. Each page is filled with breathtaking imagery and innovative work that is so hard not to fall in love with. There is so much positive visual stimulation that oozes from this book. The work does fall more on the trendy side and with little to no descriptions about the context of the work, it is difficult to process whether the work is successful or not. This leads to the misconception that as long as the work looks aesthetically pleasing then it is successful. All of this being said, there could be more context added to each section, but at the end of the day that might take away some of the magic.
It is not entirely clear how Gestalten chooses which projects will be included; whether they pull from their creative pool where designers can upload their work, or if they find work out in the wild and then contact the designers. But one things is for certain, the work seen in this book is repeated in other books from other publishing houses. Although it is just a few projects, it’s still a bummer because tis the same photography and everything. Whether the designers sent out the same press release to a bunch of publishers in the hopes that at least one will bite, or there was a lack of checking and proofing is unsure.
This book is ideal for any graphic designer or entrepreneur looking for some strikingly visual business branding inspiration. If you don’t mind shelling out the $55 retail price then go ahead and purchase, because this book makes a nice addition to the bookshelf.
